Pelicans match reports

P&G RFC match report for 15th October 2011

Pelicans win in last minute.

Pinner Pelicans [2nd XV] recorded their first win of the season over the previously unbeaten Belsize Park at Shaftesbury Playing Fields on Saturday regaining the lead in the last play of an entertaining match.  P&G’s got the better of early scrums in spite of the visitors having the heavier pack. With a quarter of an hour gone the Pelicans won a line out on the half-way line. Scrum half Lane broke down the right being supported by hooker Phil Skelton who took the ball into the Belsize 22 before passing to skipper Andy Wright who scored under the posts. Blane Healy converted.  With the Belsize front row in trouble and with no replacement prop available the match went to uncontested scrums giving the visitors more opportunity to get their powerful centres in play.  On the half-hour one of the centres went through some pretty feeble Pinner tackling to bring the score to 7 -5 at half-time.

With only 8 minutes gone in the second half Pinner took advantage of some scrappy play in mid-field for centre Richard Southam to pick up and run in a try under the posts, which was again converted.  Five minutes later Southam again picked up a loose ball to feed winger Chris Jepsen who scored the Pelican’s third try.  From the kick-off, with no Pinner player attempting to gather the ball, Belsize replied with a try on the left bring the score to 19 -10. After 25 minutes from an uncontested scrum on the home 22 Belsize worked the ball to the right to score again.  Pinner then responded with a penalty by Healy.  A few minutes later, with Pinner attempting to run the ball from deep in their own half, a sloppy pass was intercepted for Belsize to score an unconverted try and narrow the gap to 22 – 20.  With less than five minutes remaining a poor kick out from Pinner from their own 22 went straight to a Belsize player to moved the ball quickly to the left for another try to put the visitors ahead 25 – 22.  Luckily for the home team Belsize had no reliable kicker.   With thoughts of a repeat of the Uxbridge match a few weeks ago when Pelicans surrendered a winning margin the last ten minutes it looked that Belsize would retain their unbeaten record and Pelicans would have the opposite. A poor kick-off by Belsize was fielded by Healy at full-back who quickly took the ball back into the visitors half.  A ruck developed on the Belsize 22. Pelicans won the ball a flanker J J Cragg picked up, shook off some desperate tackles to score under the posts.  Healy added the conversion to give Pelicans a 29 -25 win in an entertaining match much enjoyed by the good crowd.

Next Saturday the Pelicans host Old Isleworthians with the 1st XV having a league free week-end. The Club will be holding it’s annual Deryck Westwood Day to mark the birthday of one of it’s founder members who left a bequest for members to celebrate his memory.
