To Life andVice-Presidents, Members, Patrons and Friends of P&G’s RFC.
Happy New Year. I cordially invite you, your partner and or friends to join Daphne and I for lunch at Pinner and Grammarians RFC, Shaftesbury Playing Fields, Hatch End on Saturday 24th January 2009. The Club Pavilion and Bar will be open from 12 noon and it is anticipated that lunch will be served around 12:30 p.m. I apologise for the short notice. The event was originally planned for December but the pre-Christmas period proved unpopular. This year is one of three significant anniversaries. The original Pinner RFC was formed in 1934 [75th], the clubhouse was opened on 23rd January 1954 [55th] and the merger to form Pinner & Grammarians took place on 1st January 1969 [40th]. This Lunch will be the first of several celebrations
Our 1st XV is having it’s most successful season for many years and is challenging for promotion. Others clubs in the area have folded or merged but we have no intention of doing likewise and are still very much in existence. Our Mini-rugby section, only started in 2007, is thriving. The Club 1st XV will be playing Hayes in a Herts / Middx Div 4n league match kicking off at 2:00 p.m. I hope that you will stay on to give support either to the team or the bar or both. Be advised that the match will be on the top pitch so if you plan to watch suitable footwear should be brought.
These are exciting times for us. The L B of Harrow has indicated that it will negotiate a long lease and look favourably on plans for a significant extension to cope with the mini and youth rugby and our greater involvement with the local community.
To defray costs and boost club funds we request a donation of £15 per head. Drinks [wines, beers, spirits etc] will be available at Club prices. If you have any special dietary requirements please let me know. To assist the members who have volunteered to do the catering, could you please let me know as soon as possible if you intend to come and the number of guests who will accompany you.
I look forward to seeing you on 24th January.
Best wishes
David Hiles, President.

Staines match is cancelled – fun session instead
January 11, 2009 by Admin
Sunday 11th January
Unfortunately owing to the weather it was decided that the home match with Staines RFC would need to be posponed until later in the season.
However, Mini’s chairman,Steve George decided that a fun training session could get the go ahead. Despite very cold weather a good number of ‘layered up’ players turned up for an action packed session. THe U9′,U10’s,U11’s and U12’s combined together and guided by Ian’s well thought out and delivered session kept players on their toes, on each others backs! and created great games that involved ball handling, team work and pad work. The use of the scrum machine was introduced at the end of the session to great success – photos in the gallery
Paul and Bert ran their respective age groups and again the emphasis was on keeping warm, active and having fun – the pads did make their way over from the U9’s so that the U8’s could have a practice.
Well done to all those that suffered the inclement weather and made the session great fun.
The coaches made a special announcement this week – despite not listening when being told! Ian was voted coach of the week – well done.

Youth Section Training
Our Thursday evening sessions, which will run from 18.00 to 19.30, will commence on Thursday, September 10th. They will be every week, excluding school holidays.
Hello and welcome to the mini rugby section of our club. Here are some quick questions and answers about mini rugby.
Training:
Sundays 10am – 12pm September – May
From U6’s to U12’s Pinner & Grammarians RFC is one of the best clubs around to start and develop young rugby players. With the emphasis on safety and enjoyment, young players can develop their skills in training and competitive matches against other clubs in the region.
All our coaches are RFU Qualified and CRB checked and we have a club-wide commitment to child welfare makes us a great club for learning and playing rugbyRegular training, home & away matches and festivals social events e.g. parties, bbq’s and award presentations for the players and parents
Is there a good age for children to start playing Rugby?
Children can start playing tag rugby as soon as they are old enough to start school. Different children become ready at different ages. Some children do not take to tag rugby and can not wait to be old enough to participate in the full contact version.
Please could you list all the necessary equipment a child would require to get started playing Rugby?
To start tag rugby all the child needs is a pair of boots (soccer boots are fine as long as they do not have moulded studs) and something suitable to run about in. A gum shield is required when your child moves up to the under 8’s
Are there any particular brands of equipment you would recommend for beginners?
No.
How much would someone expect to pay for good quality items listed above?
New Boots for a small child can be bought for between 10 and 20 Pounds. A low cost gumshield can be bought for 5 Pounds. I recommend buying kit from a specialist independent sports shop, such as The Real Sports Shop in Watford, however the club has a great range of items both new and second hand that can be purchased. We encourage older children to donate old boots so younger children and parents can keep costs down.
Is there a second hand market for these items? If so, are then any particular signs someone should look out for to ensure the equipment will stand the test of time?
Second hand boots are always worth buying if they fit your child. Our club kit shop includes a second hand section plus ebay can be a good source.
How much should a parent expect to pay for lessons?
Membership of the club is 40 Pounds per season. Our club makes a reduction for younger brothers and sisters.
How can parents identify a good teacher/club (qualifications etc)?
All Pinner and Grammerians coaches have RFU approved qualifications and are CRB checked.
To become proficient, how many hours per week would you suggest a child should practice?
This depends on the child, but generally speaking for children under the age of 10, 1 – 2 hours per week at the club session would be enough. The club trains every Sunday from 10am to 12am.
Although it will vary from child to child how long does it normally take for a child to become competent in this sport?
An average athletic child would be able to enjoy and fully participate in tag rugby after 2 – 3 hours coaching.
Are there any other important tips we can offer?
Enjoy it!
